Overview
A symbol is a combination of graphic elements that represent something to us – a picture that tells a story. Our job as designers is how to use symbols correctly and to avoid misinterpretation.
After some introductory projects and presentations, students will work on creating a system of icons that represent a given topic. Each student will be responsible for all aspects of developing cohesive system of iconography. This will include concepts, content development, material research, sketch designs, culminating in visualizations and formal presentations of your final deliverable.
Topics covered in this course include:
1) Designing for a system that includes a wide range of media formats and sizes
2) Interpreting and visualizing a specific theme in an innovative way
3) Integrating shape and color to produce compelling designs that reinforce concepts
4) Using a rigorous design process to develop a smart, effective solution
5) We will also address issues related to audience, image creation and production
